Wisconsin: The State with the Largest German Ancestry Group

Wisconsin is widely recognized as the state with the largest German ancestry group, particularly when ancestry is measured as a percentage of the population. According to U.S. Census estimates, more than one and a half million Wisconsins report at least some German ancestry, representing roughly one-quarter of the state’s residents. German heritage is not merely a historical feature in Wisconsin; it continues to shape the state’s food, traditions, architecture, festivals, communities, and regional identity.

There is one important distinction: Wisconsin has the highest proportion of residents with reported German ancestry, while California has the largest absolute number because California has a much larger total population.
